I happen to have a roommate. ‘Alani which is Hawaiian for orange. Adopted as a kitten by the landlady she has the run of the house, going in and out at will. At first she was real shy towards me but warmed up quick. As I write this she is sitting beside me on the couch, purring away.
Maui has a large population of feral cats and like Key West, a large feral chicken population. But there is no rabies out here. It’s been wiped out and there are strict controls on bring a pet to the island. It takes a lot of time and money if you want to bring a cat or dog into the state, and forget about snakes, rodents, or other exotics. There are no snakes here, along with no squirrels, raccoons, possums, or other similar wildlife.
In the meantime, it will be nice to have a furry face around to keep me company. Even more better because I don’t have to care for her. No doubt I will wind up with one of my own again someday, but ‘Alani will do just fine for now.
