It’s not often one can revel in the fact someone else has died, but in this case, an exception can be made. Fidel Castro, Cuban dictator and all around asshole finally smoked his last cigar this past Friday. For those of you not born in the 1950’s, Castro was one of the three big bogey men on the planet hated by all ‘mericans. The other two being Nikita Khrushchev of the old Soviet Union and Mao Tse Tung of China. Thanks to these three pricks there was no real peace in the world for 3 decades, but then, there never has been any peace on this planet since man first learned to kill with a rock or a stick. But these three just had themselves a good time constantly poking the U.S. into confrontations and keeping us ever on the brink of thermonuclear war. And yes, we were just as guilty of poking back.
At no time did we come closer to annihilating the planet than during the infamous Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. I remember this time distinctly because we did the famous duck and cover under our desks at school.
Yeah, laugh now. This shit was real back then and we had to do it. I remember sitting on the floor, hands over my head, and the girl next to me was crying her eyes out, scared to death, like she believed the missiles were inbound right then and there. And no doubt a small wooden desk would provide more than sufficient protection from a multi megaton warhead. I would love to find the son of bitch who came up with this idea and kick the shit out of them repeatedly. What the hell were they thinking! No wonder us baby boomers are so fucked up.
Anyways, Castro had a lot to do with all this and quickly became the next most evil thing since Stalin and Hitler. Later on, in 1980, he got the brilliant idea to let anyone who wanted to, leave Cuba and come to the U.S. I was living in Orlando at the time and every boat which could make the crossing from the Keys to Havana was making it’s way south to pick up refugees, and collect some dough along the way. Cubans who had run from Cuba when Castro took over and now lived in Miami were desperate to get any relatives or family out of there as soon as possible. It was quite the spectacle.
And ever since then, the Keys constantly get an influx of refugees fleeing what has to be a bad situation in Cuba making their way to the U.S. in what ever they can find or build which floats. Some make it, many don’t.
It’s hard to say what will happen now. Fidel’s loving brother Raul is currently the boss and given the U.S. has been trying to normalize relations with Cuba again, I suspect he smells lots of money flowing into the island as rich U.S. corporations and tourists flock down there. It’s the same old thing. You don’t conquer a country with the armies, you conquer it with corporations and money.
In the meantime, there are big celebrations going on in South Florida as those who suffered and lost so much under Castro’s rule rejoice. Can’t say I blame them. I met more than a few Cubans in the Keys who despised this asshole and could not wait to hear of his death.
Well, good riddance to the son of a bitch. The world is a slightly better place since he stopped wasting oxygen. But I am sure there will be more Fidels to follow. With more bullshit, saber rattling, and freedom crushing. It will never end. I just hope the schools have stronger desks to hide under now.
