As of this posting Key West is now dead center in the path of Hurricane Irma, and predicted to be a full blown Cat 5 when it does pass through. This storm could not have picked a more ideal path to come and hit the Keys. It missed most of the land masses, followed all the warm water it could find, and avoided any shearing or steering currents.
When it hits, wherever it may be, the destruction is going to be horrendous. Key West itself is going to be devastated. There are shelters on the island but it’s doubtful they will hold up very well in a storm like this. A lot of people chose to remain on the island and ride it out, including a few friends of mine. I’ve begged them to get out but they refuse. Not sure they understand what is coming. But, they made the decision to stay and will have to live with it.
As I’ve been watching the drama unfold on the weather channels I remember all the adventures and times I spent in Key West. It’s been quite a run and I would like to think it will still be there after the storm but I got a sneaking feeling it will never be the same after this. At least I got some good memories, and maybe a few not so good, but I wouldn’t trade them for anything. In all my travels and said adventures, Key West has always remained home port. It’s the one place I always felt like I belonged there. Had Irma not showed up, I would have been working on returning. Now, who knows what will happen.
In the meantime, I dug through the archives and found some old memories in photos. Figger I may as well post them again, just so we can remember what Key West was.
Stay safe if you are in the path. It’ll be alright. Just gonna take some time to recover from this.
